Leased line installation

Leased line installation, explained step by step.

A leased line is a dedicated fibre built to your door, so installing one takes planning. Here is what happens between order and go-live, what can add cost or time, and how we keep it moving.

Why it takes longer

A new fibre, built just for you.

Standard broadband uses capacity that is already in the street. A leased line is a dedicated circuit, so the carrier often has to extend or build the fibre route all the way into your premises.

Lead times are usually a few weeks to a few months, depending on how much needs building. Much of that time is surveys and permissions rather than digging, which is why starting early makes such a difference.

Step by step

From order to go-live.

Every leased line follows the same path. What varies is how much work each step turns up.

1. Feasibility and desktop survey

A free check of what is available, then the carrier reviews its records: distance to the nearest fibre point, existing duct and spare capacity. Usually a few working days.

2. Site survey

An engineer walks the actual route, outside and in: the entry point, duct and chamber condition, the internal run and where the equipment will sit. Typically two to four weeks after order.

3. Permissions and build

Wayleaves for land you do not own, council permits for any highway digging, then the build itself. Often the longest step.

4. Install and go live

The fibre is terminated, the circuit tested and commissioned, and you go live under a full SLA, monitored by us.

Speeding it up

How to get live sooner.

Most delays are avoidable with a little preparation. These are the four that make the biggest difference.

Get landlord consent early

If you lease the building, a wayleave from your landlord is often the slowest part. Start the conversation on day one.

Know your entry point

Where cables currently enter the building, and where your comms cabinet or room is.

Plan power and space

The equipment needs a secure spot with power, ideally in a comms cabinet.

Order before you need it

Moving premises? Order as soon as the lease is signed, not when you move in.

Who does what

We manage it. You make a few decisions.

Our part

What we handle

  • The order and every carrier update
  • Chasing surveys and permissions
  • Explaining any construction charge in plain English
  • Router setup, testing and go-live
  • Monitoring and SLA support afterwards
Your part

What we need from you

  • A landlord contact for any consents
  • Access to the building for surveys
  • A place with power for the equipment
  • A decision on any construction charge
Need to be online before the leased line is ready?

4G or 5G mobile broadband can get you trading from day one and then stay on as an automatic backup.

Common questions

Leased line installation, answered.

Usually a few weeks to a few months, depending on how much fibre needs building to your premises. We give you a realistic date after the free feasibility check and manage every step from there.

Standard installation is normally built into the monthly price across the contract term. You only pay extra if the physical build exceeds the carrier’s construction allowance, and any charge is quoted in writing before work starts.

A one-off charge where building the route costs more than the allowance already included in the standard price. It is not a penalty or margin, and we will always share the breakdown behind it.

Written permission to run cable across land or through a building you do not own. It costs little to ask for, but the landowner has to respond, which can add weeks to the programme.

Sometimes. If the existing duct is blocked or there is no route at all, the carrier may need to dig, with a council permit for any highway works. The site survey tells us before anything is agreed.

Access for the surveys, a landlord contact if you lease the building, and a secure place with power for the equipment.

Yes. 4G or 5G mobile broadband can get you online from day one, then stay on as an automatic backup once the leased line is live.
