The two bits of UniFi maintenance everyone knows they should do and most people never get round to: keeping firmware current, and taking backups. Skip them and you are one bad update or one failed device away from a long, stressful afternoon. Do them, and your network stays secure and recoverable. As a team that maintains UniFi networks for businesses every week, here is the simple routine we follow. Menu names vary by firmware, so we have kept to what you are doing.
Why it matters
Firmware updates close security holes and fix bugs, so an out-of-date network is both less secure and more likely to misbehave. Backups mean that if a device fails or an update goes wrong, you restore your whole configuration in minutes instead of rebuilding it from scratch. Together they are the difference between a quick fix and a bad day.
Step by step
- Take a backup first. Before touching anything, go to Settings → System → Backups and download a configuration backup. This is your undo button.
- Check for updates. Look at Settings → System for a UniFi OS update, and open Devices to see which access points and switches have firmware waiting.
- Update in the right order. Update the controller and UniFi OS first (Settings → System), then the devices. Do it during a quiet period, as devices briefly drop as they restart.
- Update devices one at a time. In Devices, update each access point or switch and let it come back before starting the next, so you can spot any that do not return.
- Turn on scheduled auto-updates (optional). Under Settings → System you can set automatic updates within a maintenance window, keeping things current without manual effort.
- Keep a backup off the device. Store a copy of your backup somewhere other than the Dream Machine itself, so a hardware failure never takes the backup with it.
- Verify afterwards. Once everything is back, check in Devices that your access points, switches and internet are all healthy.
The golden rule: take a backup before every update. Updates almost always go smoothly, but the one time one does not, a two-minute backup turns a potential rebuild into a two-minute restore.
Stuck, or would rather not risk it? You do not need to be a network engineer, and you do not need to do updates holding your breath. We maintain UniFi networks for businesses every week, keeping firmware current and backups in hand, so if an update worries you or a device does not come back, one call and we will take it from here.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I update UniFi firmware?
Apply important and security updates promptly, and review the rest regularly rather than letting them pile up. Staying reasonably current avoids the big, risky jump that comes from updating a network that is years behind.
Will updating firmware drop my network?
Devices restart as they update, so expect a brief drop per device. That is why you do it during a quiet period and one device at a time. The network comes back on its own once each finishes.
How do I back up a UniFi Dream Machine?
Export a configuration backup from the controller and store a copy somewhere other than the device itself. With that backup, a failed or replaced device can be restored to its full configuration in minutes.
Can UniFi updates be automatic?
Yes. You can schedule automatic updates within a maintenance window so the network stays current without manual effort. Many businesses still prefer a managed approach for important devices, with a backup taken first.
