Setting up guest WiFi on a TP-Link Omada OC300 controller

A guest network should let visitors online without giving them a foot in the door to your business. Omada handles this well through the controller, and as a team that configures Omada for businesses every week, here is how we set up guest WiFi that is welcoming for visitors and safe for you. Exact labels move between Omada firmware versions, so we have focused on what each step achieves.

Step by step

  1. Create a dedicated guest SSID. Go to Settings → Wireless Networks → Create New Wireless Network and name it for visitors. Never share the staff WiFi password.
  2. Turn on Omada’s Guest Network option. In that SSID’s advanced settings, enable Guest Network, which isolates visitors and blocks access to your internal network.
  3. Assign guests to their own VLAN. Under Settings → Wired Networks → LAN, create a guest network with its own VLAN, then set the guest SSID to use it.
  4. Enable the portal. Go to Settings → Authentication → Portal, create a portal for the guest network and add your branding, an acceptable-use notice and, if you want, a password or voucher login.
  5. Set rate limits. Apply per-client upload and download limits to the guest SSID so visitors never slow the connection the business relies on.
  6. Lock out internal devices. Under Settings → Network Security → ACL, add a rule blocking the guest VLAN from reaching your other networks.
  7. Test as a guest. Join the guest WiFi on a phone and check the internet works while your internal devices stay out of reach.

The two things that matter most are the Guest Network option and putting guests on their own VLAN. Together they keep visitors firmly separated from the business, which is the entire job of a guest network.

Stuck at any step? You do not need to be a network engineer. Configuring Omada guest networks and portals is everyday work for us, so if the VLAN will not route or the portal will not appear, do not battle it alone, one call and we will take it from here.

Frequently asked questions

Does Omada have a guest network feature?

Yes. Omada includes a guest setting on wireless networks that isolates visitors and blocks access to your internal network. Paired with a dedicated guest VLAN, it keeps visitors safely separated.

How do I keep guests off my staff network on Omada?

Put the guest SSID on its own VLAN and enable the guest option. The guest VLAN is given no route to your other networks, so visitors can reach only the internet, not your devices.

Can Omada show a login or terms page?

Yes. Omada’s Portal feature provides a captive portal where you can brand the landing page, show acceptable-use terms, and require a password or voucher login if you want one.

Can I limit guest bandwidth on Omada?

Yes. You can set per-client rate limits on the guest network so visitors get a usable connection without ever affecting the speed your business needs.

How Synergy Max helps

Guest WiFi is quick to switch on and easy to get subtly wrong, so we set it up properly as part of your Omada network: a separate guest VLAN, isolation on, internal kit unreachable, a clean portal and sensible limits. For the thinking behind it, see our guides to the guest WiFi settings every business should check and what a VLAN is. New to the OC300? Start with our first-time setup guide.

Want guest WiFi that is safe as well as simple?

We will set up a properly separated guest network on your Omada, isolation on, internal kit hidden, portal and limits in place, so visitors are looked after and your business stays out of reach.
