0333, 0800 or a local number: which business phone number is right for you?

Published 16 September 2026 · 6 min read

Choosing the right business phone number: 0333, 0800 or local

The number you put on your website and van is a small decision that quietly shapes how customers see you, and what it costs them to call. Local, 0333, Freephone 0800: each sends a different signal and carries a different cost. Here is what each type actually means, who pays, and how to pick the right one, or the right mix, for your business.

Why your number choice matters

Two things ride on it. First, perception: a local number feels close and familiar, a national number feels bigger, and a Freephone number feels generous and customer-friendly. Second, cost to the caller: some numbers are free to ring, some are charged like a normal call, and a few cost the caller more and can put them off. The good news is that with a modern phone system, the number is separate from the line, so any number can ring your team wherever they are.

Which should you choose?

  • Want to feel local and trusted? A geographic number like 0151 roots you in your area and tends to get answered.
  • Want to look national? An 0333 number drops the geography, costs the caller the same as a normal landline call, and sits inside most inclusive minute bundles.
  • Want to encourage people to call? A Freephone 0800 or 0808 number is free for the customer, which lowers the barrier for sales and support. You pick up the cost, which is often money well spent.
  • Thinking about 084 or 087? Usually don’t. They can cost callers a premium and carry a dated, call-centre feel that works against you.

You are not limited to one. A lot of businesses run a local number for familiarity, an 0333 for a national footprint, and an 0800 for sales, with all of them ringing into the same phone system. The number is just a front door; they can all open into the same building.

Can I have a local number if I am not there?

Yes. Because modern phones work over the internet, a number no longer has to live where you do. You can have a Liverpool 0151 number ring a team working from home or another city, or present several local numbers for different areas you serve, all handled by one system. And if you already have numbers your customers know, you can almost always keep them, see our guide to keeping your number when you switch provider.

Frequently asked questions

Is an 0333 number free to call?

No, but it is charged to the caller at the same rate as a standard 01 or 02 landline number, and it comes out of inclusive minutes on most mobile and landline plans. So for the caller it is effectively no more than a normal call.

Who pays for an 0800 number?

You do. Freephone 0800 and 0808 numbers are free for the customer to call, and the business covers the cost of inbound calls. That is the trade-off: a lower barrier for customers to get in touch, paid for by you.

Is 0800 free from mobiles?

Yes. Since 2015, calls to 0800 and 0808 Freephone numbers are free from UK mobiles as well as landlines, which was not always the case, so they are genuinely free for the caller today.

0333 vs 0800, which is better for business?

It depends on the goal. 0333 gives you a national look at no extra cost to the caller and no inbound cost to you. 0800 removes the cost for the customer entirely, which can lift response on sales and support lines, but you pay for the calls. Many businesses use both.

Can I keep a local number but work elsewhere?

Yes. With an internet-based phone system, a local number can ring anywhere, so you can keep your area identity while your team works from home, another office or on the move.
