Moving premises? A telecoms checklist so you go live on day one

Published 14 January 2026 · 5 min read

A business preparing its telecoms for a move to new premises

Moving premises is exciting and stressful in equal measure, and in all the fuss over furniture, signage and keys, one thing has a habit of being left until last: the telecoms. It is also the one thing you cannot magic up on moving day. Get the connection sorted early and you walk into the new place already working. Leave it late and you can find yourself running a business from a mobile hotspot in an empty office, wondering why nobody warned you.

The good news is that a move is a genuine opportunity. It is the perfect moment to tidy up services you have outgrown, drop the ones you no longer use, and set the new place up properly from day one. A short checklist keeps it calm.

Start with the connection, and start early

This is the golden rule: sort your internet first, and sort it well ahead of the move. A new fibre line, and especially a leased line, can take weeks to install if new cabling or street works are needed, and that timescale is not something anyone can rush at the last minute. The earlier we check what is available at the new address, the more likely you are to be live on day one rather than day thirty.

Your moving-day telecoms checklist

Run through these and very little will catch you out:

  • Check availability at the new address. What broadband or leased line can actually be delivered there, and how long will it take?
  • Keep your numbers. Your phone numbers can usually move with you, so customers never notice a thing. This needs arranging in advance, not on the day.
  • Plan the phone system. A cloud-based hosted phone system makes moves far easier, because it is not tied to a physical line in the old building.
  • Design the Wi-Fi for the new space. A new floorplan means new blackspots. It is worth planning coverage rather than hoping one router reaches everywhere.
  • Sort out failover. A new building is exactly when you want a backup connection ready, so any teething problems do not stop you trading.
  • Review before you renew. A move is the ideal time to drop what you no longer need and bring everything onto one tidy bill.

The businesses that move smoothly all have one thing in common: they started the telecoms conversation weeks before the vans arrived, not the week of.

Why the numbers matter more than you think

Losing your phone number in a move is a quiet disaster. It is on your website, your vehicles, your business cards and in every customer's phone. In almost all cases it can move with you, but only if it is arranged ahead of time. It is one of the easiest things to overlook and one of the most painful to get wrong.
